IRRITABLE
BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)
WHAT
IS IT ?
Quite Simply
it is the term given to a disorder of the bowel which causes the
contents of the bowel to either be forced through the intestines
too quickly (diaorrhea), or too slowly (constipation), or in some
cases alternating between diaorrhea and constipation.
IBS can
thus be categorised in the following simple terms:
1.’THE SLUGGISH BOWEL’
2.’THE HYPERACTIVE BOWEL
3.’THE CONFUSED BOWEL’.
Who
is likely to suffer with IBS?
Any one can
suffer with this condition, from the infant with colic to the
adult whose life is made a misery from the condition.
WHAT
ARE THE SYMPTONS OF IBS?
There are
many SYMPTOMS of of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, including some or
all of the following:
o
Excess wind
o Excess bloating
o Constipation
o Diaorrhea
o Abdominal pain
o Discomfort
o Mucus in stool
o Urgent need to go to toilet
o Rectal discomfort
o Headaches
o Backache
o Painful periods
o Rashes
o Fluid retention
WHAT
CAUSES IBS?
There are
many causes or triggers of IBS, including any of the following:
§ Stress
§ Imbalance of stomach bacteria
§ Poor diet eg.refined sugars and lack of protein and fibre
§ Low stomach acid levels
§ Overuse of antibiotics
§ Overgrowth of bad bacterias, eg.candida albicans
§ Food poisoning
§ Gastroenteritis
§ Lack of digestive enzymes
HELP FOR IBS?
IBS is easily
treated with making changes in the diet, removing any food intolerances
and correcting any imbalances in the digestive system. Symptoms
are often reduced within a few days, although it can take several
months to correct any imbalances and before a person can return
to their normal diet.
